Salt Shaker

Design Brief

Model and create a 3D printed and wood turned functioning salt shaker

Understanding the Task

Beginning with initial shape exploration, I needed to understand how a 3D print and wood turned shape might be able to fit together in a cohesive design.

Further Exploration

I started exploring ways that the two shapes could feasibly fit together, while also designing something that would be more complex than my initial shape exploration

CAD Exploration

To understand the concept of revolved objects as well as to inspire different shapes and designs, I made 12 revolves based off one line.

Taking inspiration from the form of the revolves, I created 10 more revolves, this time splitting them to see how they would work with a wooden piece and a 3D printed piece.

I picked my favorite designs from the chopped revolves and used elements from others to design my 3 favorites.

Final Design

Bringing the Idea to Life

Turning wood on the lathe, I had to measure the diameter of different sections of the wood as I went to ensure that the 3D print would fit seamlessly over the wood.

I used the drill press to create a hole to store the salt in the shaker.
