Patagonia Ice Cream Scoop

Project Brief

Design an ice cream scoop for a company, focusing on ergonomics, brand language, and manufacturability.

Brand Research

“We’re in business to save our home planet. Its core values are to build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to protect nature, and not be bound by convention.”

- Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard

Bright colors and their recognizable logo are seen throughout products, along with an angled trapezoid shape.

Making the Final Product

Making the Mold

Placing the foam scoop into a mold to prepare for resin casting, I began by shaping the scoop in a waxy clay that would have silicone poured over the top to make a two piece mold. This process was repeated to make the second half of the mold.

I shaped the final foam design using the bandsaw, dremel, drill, and other power tools, as well as sanding and carving out the iconic Patagonia mountain range.

Pouring the Resin

I placed the two sides of the mold together and poured resin into the top. After waiting for the resin to cure, I removed the mold and it was time to begin cleaning up the ice cream scoop.

Final Touches

Priming, sanding, and painting were the final steps of this process. After painting a final coat, I placed a decal with the Patagonia logo underneath the mountain range.
